Founded in 2005, the South Florida Jewelry Arts Guild is a thriving jewelry arts community including metalsmiths, glass artists, seed bead artists, metal & polymer clay artists and others who incorporate both novel materials and traditional gems and metals in their work. This dynamic group meets monthly for educational presentations and networking opportunities. Our 100 plus members are from the South Florida tri-county area and beyond.
History
What began as a garden variety Bead Society has blossomed into a whole new concept in the art world: The South Florida Jewelry Arts Guild, a dynamic reflection of the contemporary trend among jewelry designers to incorporate unexpected materials into their craft. Jewelry design has burgeoned into the art of mini-sculpture, incorporating traditional gems and metals as well as glass beads, polymer clay, fiber, and metal clay.
Two retired advertising executives, Adrienne Gaskell and Joyce Nelson, conceived the guild to fill the need for a jewelry arts community in South Florida. The mandate was the dissemination of information and the extension of moral and professional support to studio jewelry artists in the area.
They invited jewelry artists of all disciplines to come together for the first time to share their dreams, interests and expectations. In this manner the guild became, and still is, a true member organization, fulfilling the needs of the community.
Members of the guild enjoy the advantages inherent in broad-spectrum organizations, such as the cross-pollination of design ideas and many members taking advantage of the educational opportunities to learn multiple disciplines. Although the group shares sufficient commonality in their activities, SFJAG stresses the importance of understanding the processes of all disciplines to increase appreciation of jewelry as an art form.
