Dear Adrienne,

Casa Valentina has asked JAG to help the girls their organization supports.

Casa Valentina's mission is to provide young women in Miami-Dade County who age out of foster care with safe, affordable housing and the support services they need to become successful, independent adults.

Of course, they have monetary needs that I hope we can find a way to help with, but, in addition, I was surprised to learn that they also have a need for beads and bead teachers. The girls want to learn to make beaded jewelry to give to their donors as a thank you gift.

Casa Valentina LogoHow JAG members can help

ˇ Design a bead project for novice beaders in the colors and theme of the Casa Valentina logo.

ˇ Donate beads and beading supplies to be used in projects.

ˇ Contact bead stores/suppliers to donate supplies.

ˇ Donate time to teach the project to the girls; age 17 to 22. Tuesday afternoons, 4 - 7 pm.

ˇ Help raise money for the girls of Casa Valentina.

I would like to hear from anyone who can help in any of these areas on any level. Also, if you have ideas or suggestions of other ways JAG can help make a difference in the lives of these young women, please let me know.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Adrienne Gaskell - President

Chris Darway Ring  Chris Darway Workshop

Two seats remaining

Friday - Sunday, April 27, 28 & 29

ArtCenter - Lincoln Rd. Miami Beach

The Ring as Mechanism: Rings do not have to be round nor static. This workshop is designed to introduce basic ideas of mechanism in jewelry in a non traditional way.The first day will be the construction of one of Chris' self adjusting rings from a "kit". Areas to be covered are the clean up and preparing of rough castings, making a stainless steel wire spring, soldering sterling to stainless, tube rivets and finishing techniques. The Knuckle Adjuster RingŠ incorporates a knuckle joint, torsion spring, tube rivets and articulated joints. It will accommodate a size two to a size ten finger. Day two starts with a simple ring blank of flat, round, square or other shape metal and is a jumping off point for students to make a ring that shakes, rolls, spins or has some sort of movement. Day three will allow for further exploration.

  • Skill level: High functioning beginner or burned out expert. Sawing and basic soldering skills.
  • Class fee: $350 JAG member & ArtCenter member price + materials, class limited to 10 students
