If you have worked with polymer clay, you have probably made an earring, or two… or ten. It is a simple starter project. From the start of a design to the finished set, earrings are a very satisfying thing to make, wear, and gift. But there is so much more to making earrings. This class will focus on the options and give you the pros and cons of each so you can make informed decisions. Topics covered will include:
- Overall Design
- Post versus wire
- Commercial findings versus handmade
- Embedded findings and wire embellishments
- Edges (plain, bezel, painted)
We will kick off the class by choosing a color palette. I will introduce you to a couple of quickie polymer techniques that will give you plenty of design options. You will then create a pile of components that will be used to develop your very own earring collection while you try different approaches to assembly. You will leave this class with multiple pairs of completed earrings and the parts to complete many more!!
Discipline: Polymer Clay
Skill level: All
Workshop cost: $95.00
Kit cost: $20.00 (cash, paid to instructor). Includes materials for the class and a sampling of earring wires, posts, jump rings, and wire to make your own ear wires.
Your Instructor
“My playful curiosity drives my work. When I assess the possibilities, ignore convention, apply techniques from different mediums, and utilize unusual materials is when I have the most fun. I hope the playfulness is passed along to the wearer and brings them a little smile.”
Lynn believes that the magic happens in the making—giving time to a creative practice; letting yourself become immersed in the process; sawing, sewing, forming, cutting, hammering, breaking, snapping, rolling, and bending. As you lean into the process, you notice the changes along the way, in your work and in yourself.
Polymer clay is the main material that is used in Lynn’s art jewelry. It has magical properties that allow it to play well with other materials. Her approach is to develop simple elements using mark making, textures, and sgraffito techniques, then she combines and layers them to provide a depth of interest and tactile quality that she so enjoys.
Lynn Yuhr is a self-taught artist. She has a Masters degree in geology and spent 30 years being trained by mother nature. Observing and interpreting nature and the impacts from man-made structures was a way of life. The intersection of these observations (natural and man-made) is what has stuck with her and where she loves to play with her art jewelry.
